The Irish sept O`Cuana is the origin of today's Cooneys. The name means "Handsome".
The Cooney motto is "Virtue is the only nobility".
The O`Cuana originated in and around Co. Tyrone. With migration they re-established at Elphin in N. Connacht, as is recorded in "the Annals of the Four Masters". Their stronghold eventually became Ballycooney in the Barony of Loughrea, in Co. Galway. For over three centuries the name thrived and spread out into counties Leitrim, Roscommon, Silgo, Galway and Clare. The Cooney name in Co. Cork, is generally a variant of the Munster name O`Cuanachain, which is sometimes translated as Counihan. the name today is found in its greatest number in the North Connacht area as well as Co. Cork.
